(1)The exchange of one type of rate index for another. For example, if the expected price of coal is referenced to the price at one location, exchanging that price for the price at another location constitutes a basis swap. (2)A basis swap can also involve swapping the base currency, such as swapping the base price of a commodity in US dollars for the base price in Japanese yen. (3)Basis swapping is used in the energy industry as a technique for managing price fluctuations, most commonly fuel prices, which may vary from market to market or country to country
